Clinical background
Disease: Diphtheria (respiratory)
Symptoms: With malaise, sore throat, anorexia, low-grade fever and swelling of the neck (“bull neck”) from inflammation.
Complications: exotoxin-induced damage to other organs
Mechanism of Infection: Transmission from person to person through close physical and respiratory contact. Transmission is increased in overcrowded and poor socioeconomic conditions
