Clinical background
Disease: Erythema infectiosum acutum (fifth disease)
Symptoms: “Slapped-cheek” rash on the face and a lacy red rash on the trunk and limbs in kids, adults may develop point pain or swelling (hands, wrists, and knees)
Complications: Spontaneous abortion, Hydrops fetalis
Mechanism of Infection: Person-to-Person transmission: Virus is spread by direct contact with respiratory secretions; Transplacental infection
